I would probably have to agree that Rotterdam is the best of the tour; the whole show from start to finish is amazing really. But like cliff said the Dark Star is a level of improv that I don't think was duplicate before or after this remarkable performance.

It's a tough call though, Grendel; the incredible level of consistency during this tour makes it nearly impossible to pick just ONE that is the 'must own'. If you already own Steppin' Out, Hundred Year Hall and Rockin' the rein then you have the best parts of 4/8, 4/24, and 4/26 albeit in a somewhat different mix. So I'd say maybe give 4/14 and 5/26 a spin before you make a final decision...

Yup, would have to agree with you, clem, but one cannot forget the first night in Paris 5/3! An all around stellar show, fo sho. The truckin' through wharf medley is one for the ages. Not to mention that China->rider, Tn. Jed, and Jack Straw wall all culled form this show for the official Euro '72 album. I've always felt that 4/26 is the most overrated show of the tour, while 5/3 is the most underrated...

All great suggestions...knew you guys would come thru...I'll contemplate and make a decision b4 the holidays.

I needed to ask b/c the set lists are so similar it's really hard to distinguish w/out getting the views of folks who've really delved into the nitty gritty of the material.

Cliff's enthusiasm for Rotterdam looms large!

despite the indisputable excellence of 05-11 and 05-26 i would recommend wigan 05-07
colossal ds > too jam is the spaciest and heaviest piece of the whole tour (imo)

however, the star shone darkest in hamburg 04-29 and the instant transition from the mighty space turbulence into sugar magnolia is nothing short of masterpiece

04-08 is great as well...

Rotterdam is a good first choice, but you might also want an "Other One Night" show, also . The show before, 5/10/72, in Amsterdam, is great , and the 5/3 Paris show is another great one for The Other One . You might look at set lists, to see where the least
is . But if it is only one, Rotterdam .

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: And the winner is...

After much hand-wringing and the kind of indecision that can lead to a catatonic state if allowed to continue for too long, I decided to pull the trigger on 5/10/72, Amsterdam.

The deciding factor was that a friend was able to get me a copy of the 5/11/72 Dark Star in pretty high quality, so having that, I figured the epic "Other One" talked about so much from 5/10 was a nice companion piece.

Thanks also to the forumite who reminded me that today is CyberMonday so I saved 20% plus got the free shipping.

I again appreciate all the feedback from those who know the nuances of these shows so well...it can drive you crazy trying to choose one show from the tour when the set lists are almost identical (yet, I realize the playing itself is of A+ quality and I consider 1972 to be the band's best, most consistent year second only to the glory that is 1977.)

For example, almost every show seems to have an NFA>GDTR>NFA sandwich, yet 5/11 is considered a stand-out (I've got a line on a copy of that as well; yet another reason I chose 5/10 to purchase.)

Happy listening to all!
